Ebook About
A poet's hiking vacation turns deadly in soaring Mojave heat; his true survival story leaves you with chills. Rosenthal’s shocking ordeal was covered by The Discovery Channel and on "Fight to Survive" with Bear Grylls.A real estate broker in Downtown Los Angeles, Ed Rosenthal's passion is poetry, writing about the historic buildings he sells and advocates to preserve. He hates slumlords, is fed up with his buyers, and finally escapes to the Mojave to bathe at a natural spring and take his favorite hiking trip in Joshua Tree National Park. But his vacation soon turns into a nightmare. Over six grueling days without water, food, or hope, he discovers a well of perseverance in the snippets of his life that play over the deadly but inspiring landscape, in which he finds himself utterly and inexplicably lost. The God of Random Chance has, despite his best efforts his whole life, finally caught up to him. He describes his ordeal and its setting in intimate, vivid detail: surreal visions mix with wayfinding and intuitive wisdom in a poet’s-eye view of the life-lessons and magic that the desert can hold.

Book Salvation Canyon: A True Story of Desert Survival in Joshua Tree Review :

What I love most about this book is Rosenthal's voice. Authentic, natural, and humble, the story starts in the middle of a usual day and with the same natural attitude takes us through six days of being lost in the desert without food or water. Though it might have been a nightmare for some, in this telling, there's no false drama. Rosenthal's way of seeing life is what makes this book extraordinary. He accepts each moment as it comes. Lost in the desert in the middle of a horrible heat-wave, he seeks shade and shelter, finds kinship with cacti, rocks, the moon. When it seems the end of his life has come, the helicopter appears as a divine being come to take him home. The way Rosenthal writes his tale, the nightmare of being lost in the desert alone becomes a parable about living life, salvation, survival. It's simple and amazing.
I purchased this book because I am a wilderness lover/hiker/traveler who is captivated with and/or terrified existentially of the idea of being lost in,or dying, in the wilderness. Hence, I was compelled by this story of, essentially "what if?"Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this book. From the beginning, this author annoyed me, going on and on about his business dealings in LA for what felt like a long time and wanting to be away from his family without revealing anything personal about himself. This writing style continued throughout the book, to a seemingly implausible narrative written about his first day lost. As I imagine myself either panicking and missing detail, or pragmatically paying more attention to detail to try to remember it later, the author becomes whimsical and poetic about it. You almost start to believe you are in a fairytale vs what becomes a tale of how he barely survives. After this day, things become more realistic, but still we get no closer to really knowing this writer, who tells us of only practical things, such as his fight against the sun and his memories, not of his wife and daughter, but of his random urban gangster childhood (that I found irrelevant and boring). I longed to hear of his fears and doubts as the night sky returned each night.Although the book was interesting enough in it's suspense and the some of the writing style is good, I can't recommend it for a topic like this. I believe the writer would do better with poetry or maybe a travel article that is fully fact driven.
